On Thursday December 4th, we went to Nanjing University for an exhibition of an artist called Wu Weishan. He makes sculptures and all of his artworks are contemporary.
Professor Wu’s best and most popular sculpture is called “Sleeping Baby”, he finished it in the year 2002. This sculpture is basically about the appearance of a baby that was sleeping. In Chinese it is called “Shui Tong (睡童)”. The sculpture only contains the head of the sleeping baby, the shape is 3D oval and it looks like an egg. It is the color of Copper and it seems to be quite smooth. What I could see clearly from the sculpture is a baby sleeping peacefully with his mouth opened. If you see it from a further place, it looks very cute and adorable.
This sculpture makes me feel like being back to my comfortable bed and a bit sleepy. I think the artwork was not very clear when you look closely but when you stand far away and look, then you knows exactly what the baby is doing. Wu Weishan catches the characteristics of the baby which are: the eyes, the head and the mouth. The sculpture shows the characteristics of pure, honest, innocent and artless by a sleeping baby. It is so real.
Actually I do not like this sculpture very much because when I saw that for the first time I was surprised “who would like to make a sculpture for a dead baby!?” It really looks like a dead one which made me feel bad. However, it made me feel sweet as well as he is sleeping. I was really wondering what the baby was thinking and dreaming about. It shows a normal life of a child. I think other people might appreciate this piece of work because it is so realistic and three-D. In my opinion the ideas of this sculpture relate to the idea of being real, honest and pure. People are really motivated by this image and even the evil goes away…
